Small Soldiers is about toys that are given powerful computer chips so that they’re really smart, interactive, and fun to play with. However, those chips are meant only for military use. This creates the conflict: the Commando Elite faction starts a war with the Gorgonites after arriving on store shelves in a small town. Our main character, Alan, befriends the Gorgonite leader and slowly discovers the war unfolding.
I haven’t done much in the way of archiving this particular film, but I consider it required viewing for a few key reasons.
- Intentional or not, it doubles as a story of the queer uprising against the cis-het white patriarchy. Anyone in the trans umbrella should watch it for a bit of sorrow followed by sheer vindication.
- It is the only film I’ve ever watched that features a scene of.. what I can only describe as fireball tennis. And it’s a woman that gets to star in that scene!
Might do some deep dives on this film later!
