Battleship is a very weird film. They basically turn the tabletop game into an alien invasion movie. The main combat evokes some Battleship feels, such as near-misses vs hits or not knowing where the enemy is.
Bad acting, good story. Would have been a better film if it was its own thing instead of being shoehorned into a Battleship tabletop game format.
My interest lies in the alien backstory – what little of it there is. They’re here to.. do something. But they have interesting features, in that A. they can’t handle direct sunlight, and B. they have varying appearance. Their ships and weaponry are super interesting as well – I previously blogged about those death balls.
This is also one of the only films I’ve seen where a disabled man of color gets a chance to be the main focus for a good portion of the film. That alone is worth remembering.
My Research
The film also got a videogame adaptation. One set for Wii and DS, another for PS3/360. The quality is between middling and poor, in line with other movie tie-in games at the time (see: Battle: Los Angeles). I plan to do a deep dive on the film, looking for rare content and development notes. I will also attempt to datamine the games.
